$6,100 Grant Supports Northern Kentucky’s At-Risk Population

Give Where You Live NKY giving circle members gathered to grant $6,100 to Life Learning Center at their quarterly, speed philanthropy meeting.
This grant concludes a year of quarterly meetings for the giving circle. Since Give Where Your Live’s inception in 2019, more than $60,000 from the giving circle’s members has been awarded to Northern Kentucky nonprofits.
“Life Learning Center’s programs do a remarkable job addressing the barriers individuals face in reaching self-sufficiency,” said Nancy Grayson, President of Horizon Community Funds. “We know these funds will be put to great use and our giving circle is pleased to support an organization that does so much to strengthen our community.”

This grant will directly impact, at a minimum, 100 applicants on their journey of change to achieve full-time employment and independence through the Life Learning Center program. Life Learning Center, a designated Recovery Community Center, has developed and implemented an innovative 12-week intensive evidence-based program focused on addressing barriers in five domains of life: physical, financial, spiritual, relational, and emotional, coupled with a care continuum supported by more than 138 residential and community partners. This holistic integrated continuum of education and care facilitates transformational change, long term employment, and dignity for the "at risk" citizens of Northern Kentucky. In addition, Life Learning Center serves as a focal point of resources for community-based recovery support, to include peer support, mutual aid groups, employment, and life skills training. The people they serve become healthier, happier, and more productive individuals working to change their future.

Give Where You Live NKY is a joint initiative presented by Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky and Mueller Financial, Inc., and its format lends itself to busy community members who are looking for an easy way to give back to nonprofits that serve Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties.
The giving circle runs on a tight schedule at each meeting. Participating members nominate a nonprofit of their choice, and three names are randomly selected and briefly discussed by the group. The members then vote on their favorite of the three organizations, and each member contributes $100 for the grant to the winning organization. This process takes place in under an hour, just four times per year. The 2022 meeting schedule will be announced in January.
The format of Give Where You Live NKY also provides a way to connect funds to nonprofits without the need for nonprofits to expend financial resources and staff time on fundraising. The previous winners of Give Where You Live grants include The Scheben Care Center in Florence; The Gateway Community and Technical College Foundation, which has campus sites across Northern Kentucky; Lucky Tales Rescue in Fort Thomas; Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Covington; Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center in Florence; Family Nurturing Center in Florence; GO Pantry in Florence; The Barracks Project in Covington; Covington Partners in Covington; Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky in Covington; Esperanza Latino Center of Northern Kentucky in Covington; and No Limits Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Foundation in Park Hills.
